Keep the law inside its covenant world

The first honest move is to let Leviticus 19:9-10; Ruth 2 remain inside Israel's covenant story. Ancient law addressed worship, households, courts, land, labor, injury, debt, poverty, purity, and communal order. It was never a loose collection of slogans for modern arguments.

The gleaning laws required owners to leave margin while allowing vulnerable neighbors to gather within community. That concern matters even when the ancient legal form is not directly transferable to a modern church, household, or state.

Name what the law restrained or repaired

Ask who could be harmed, who held power, what evidence mattered, what loss required repair, and what appetite or retaliation the law placed under limit. A difficult law becomes clearer when we look for the human reality it governed instead of rushing to either defend or dismiss it.

This is the iron inside the velvet glove. The truth should be strong enough to confront us, but it should not be carried with contempt, ego, or delight in another person's shame.

Context does not weaken the authority of Scripture. Context keeps our confidence tied to what Scripture actually says.

Read through prophets, Jesus, and apostles

This study is not a shortcut for importing ancient Israel's civil penalties into a modern state, household, or church. The law belongs first to Israel's covenant story. Christians read it through its literary setting, the prophets, the teaching of Jesus, the apostolic witness, and the law's enduring revelation of God's holiness, justice, mercy, and concern for neighbors.

Follow the law's concern into the prophets' demand for justice, Jesus' teaching about mercy and the heart, and the apostolic formation of a church drawn from many nations. The goal is not cherry-picking. It is a canonical reading honest about continuity, fulfillment, change, and debate.
